Brett Kissela, MD, MS, FANA

Dr. Brett Kissela is Professor and Chair of the Department of Neurology and Rehabilitation Medicine, Executive Vice-Dean and Senior Associate Dean for Clinical Research at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, and Chief of Research Services for UC Health. He earned his medical degree from Washington University School of Medicine, St Louis, MO in1995 and completed a neurology residency at the University of Michigan Medical Center in 1999 during which he was chief resident in his final year. From there, he completed a fellowship in vascular neurology in 2000 and a Masters in Epidemiology in 2009 - both at the University of Cincinnati (UC). In recognition of his excellence and dedication to his profession, Dr. Kissela received numerous honors including the Award for Excellence in Medicine, National Medical Honor Society, Phi Beta Kappa, American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Michael S. Pessin Stroke Leadership Prize, Cincinnati Business Courier “Forty Under 40” Award, Fellow of the American Academy of Neurology, Neurology Faculty Teacher of the Year, University Hospital Collaboration Award for Doctor's Day, inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha National Medical Honor Society, UC Faculty Senate University Service Award, and has continuously been named as one of the Top Doctors in Cincinnati (Cincinnati Magazine) and Best Doctors in America (National Surveys – Woodward-White and Best Doctors, Inc.). With extensive clinical trial experience in acute stroke treatment, prevention, and recovery trials, Dr. Kissela is an internationally recognized expert on causes, outcomes, and recovery of stroke, with a special interest in the impact of diabetes on stroke and factors that influence stroke outcomes. He also participates in projects that look to improve stroke recovery with the use of innovative techniques and devices and his research efforts have led to some extremely important publications. He is Multiple-PI since 2006 on a NIH-funded population-based stroke epidemiology study. Since 2009, Dr. Kissela has been heavily involved with the NIH-funded Center for Clinical & Translational Science & Training (CCTST), UC’s hub the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) network where he now also serves as Multiple PI. At the national level, Dr. Kissela has given numerous oral presentations and has served on many committees including Co-Chair - NIH/NINDS Stroke Progress Review Group Epidemiology Section, NIH Neurological/ Aging/Musculoskeletal Epidemiology Study Section, Chair - AAN Consortium of Neurology Program Directors. He is the President of the Cincinnati Board of American Heart Association and serves as a member of the AAN Board of Directors.
